Rumors about the iMacs had been rife for a few months, and many of them were verified after Apple’s official announcement of the computer, during a live video conference in Cupertino, Calif. If a few products have been unveiled by the manufacturer, such as the Apple TV, the AirTag plotter , or the iPad Pro , the iMac was indeed one of the flagship elements of the presentation.
A new design
The iMac, whose aesthetics had not changed for a while, has a new look. What is striking, first of all, is the color: the computer is now available in seven pastel colors. We also notice that it is well refined, its thickness having come down to 11.5 mm, an impressive thinness for an all-in-one machine.
The screen now benefits from a diagonal of 24 inches, against 21.5 previously. Well almost, a small asterisk notifying that the actual size of the panel is 23.5 inches. Apple did not skimp on quality with a 4.5K model, whose brightness would reach 500 cd / m 2 . The TrueTone technology offers the possibility of adjusting the white balance and the brightness automatically, and the anti-reflective treatment of the glass is appreciable.
The manufacturer continues to transition its devices to the M1 home SoC, which allows it to miniaturize the iMac motherboard and refine the computer. As with the MacBook Air, Pro and Mac mini, this processor provides energy efficiency and high performance despite emulation by Rosetta. Its 8-core CPU and its 7-core GPU for the entry-level version (8 cores for the others) will offer significant gains compared to the old iMacs, Apple assures us, gains that we can quantify as soon as possible. of a test.
The computers will carry 8 GB of unified memory as well as 256 or 512 GB of storage. Looking at it a little more closely, the Apple site also mentions versions with 16 GB of unified memory and up to 2 TB of storage (price of these options not disclosed).
Revisited camera, audio and connectivity
The iMac’s webcam now films in 1080p, a welcome improvement in the age of telecommuting and remote conferencing. It is accompanied by three microphones, installed in the chassis, and six speakers, enough to offer a certain comfort of use “out of the box”.
On the connectivity side, the iMac have four USB-C ports, including two Thunderbolt in order to connect an additional screen if necessary. A mini-jack port is present and Wi-Fi 6 is now part of the game, coupled with Bluetooth 5.0. The power supply connects directly with a magnetic connector and has a built-in Ethernet port.
Finally, the iMacs are supplied with the Magic Mouse and a Magic Keyboard, which is finally adorned with the Touch ID fingerprint reader, very practical for unlocking the computer or identifying certain applications.
These new iMacs will be available for pre-order from April 30, and the first models are expected to ship in the second half of May. Charged € 1,449, the cheapest version does not benefit from Touch ID or the Ethernet port, and has a graphics core and two USB-C ports less. Count respectively 1,669 and 1,899 € for iMacs equipped with 256 and 512 GB of storage.
27-inch iMac and M1 “X”?
Many rumors also advanced the existence of a more muscular version of the M1 processor, dubbed M1X by some, even prophesying a chip with 20 cores. In the end, Apple stuck with its current in-house SoC for its 24-inch iMac, and nothing was revealed about the 27-inch versions of the computer. These will perhaps mark the transition to a new generation of more efficient SoC M1 … The manufacturer could also offer a larger diagonal of 28 or even 32 inches. Of course, we will be sure to keep you informed as soon as we know more about these topics.
